Kuuipo
Barbara - “Kuuipo” - assists with all classes and with new student orientation.
She was born in Wailea on the Big Island and began studying hula at the age of 3 in Kaneohe under the instruction of Emma K. Bishop. After moving to Maryland in 1991, she joined the Halau in 1996. Kuuipo says that she has wanted to be a dancer all her life. “Hula comes from the heart. It inspires me.”
Juanita -“Kealoha” - assists with all classes and began the study of hula at the age of 9 in Honolulu and continued during her teen years in Agana, Guam.
Juanita was born in Puunene, Maui, and was raised in Honolulu. She moved to Hampton, Virginia, in 1976, but upon relocating to Northern Virginia she joined the Halau in 1996. For Kealoha, dancing hula enables her to share the aloha spirit with others on the Mainland and keeps her connected to Hawaiian culture past and present.

Yvonne - “Kanani" - teaches the keiki (children's) and assists the alakai with the wahine (women's) classes. She was born in Honolulu and it was there, at the early age of three, that she began her hula studies. Soon after Kanani relocated to the DC area she continued to study hula.
As a Cherry Blossom Princess, Kanani proudly represented the State of Hawaii during the 2001 National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC. She enjoys learning about the rich and colorful history of the islands and sharing her knowledge of Hawaiian traditions with those unfamiliar with this culture here on the East Coast.

Cynthia - “Kaleinani” - was born in Honolulu and has lived in Northern Virginia since 1985. She is the Halau Administrator in charge of student registration. She often narrates the dances and chants at Halau events. Kaleinani began the study of hula
at the age of 10 and joined the Halau in 1996.
Through the teachings of Mahina and Manu, Kaleinani says she has been able
to fully embrace Hawaiian culture and has dedicated herself to perpetuating Hawaiiana.

Sabra -“Makalena” - teaches the keiki (children's) and assists with the wahine (women's) classes. She began her study of hula at the age of 4 while her family was living in Honolulu. Sabra joined the Halau in 1998.
Although not a native Hawaiian, hula has embraced her heart and soul and she is committed to spreading Hawaiiana and the spirit of aloha.
